WOW day

This day is really special. And I dedicate it for my blog and daylilies, which give me a suggestion to create it.
Today is round numbers day. I have 3000 views and this post is 50. Very much, I think so. So I want to thank you all who read and interested in my works and dreams.
There is mark of 3000 views of my page. As I use blogger and in Lithuanian, text in redactor or here is in my language, but you see numbers and can believe that I say true.

And now, as I say I want to write my post about daylilies. And not just talks, but as usual photo blog with my unusual daylily type, which blooming now. Yes - rebloomers!

And that is came very an impromptu, when I go back from exhibition of gladiolus in Panevėžys and back home with members of Lithuanian flower hybridizers society near my grandmother house and I asked to visit her. And when I take them with me to see how my fields look in not blooming season I was shocked. I have seen many rebloomers. Almost all Floyd Cove Nursery daylilies set new scapes and blooms. What is sad, that they are not in my own garden and I can't to stay in grandmother home to see them. Oh poor me. One of rebloomers is No String Attached. That one I wanted to see the most, but in normal blooming season that one won't set scape and I think that this will happened next year, but now I see that this one want to rebloom. But I am happy and for that, what I saw.

William Marchant seedling. Crawned Heads x Fiji. This is second seedling of that cross, which has bloomed for me this year. Just this one wanted to start blooming now. Cute one.
Curb Appeal. This is more than perfect variety, which give me many blooms this year. I counted 5 scapes and when I come closer I have seen and 6th. I get it just this just year, but I have seen more blooms than in those, which I grow 3 years.
Water Drops. First bloom this year and it look wow how great. And for this I am very appreciate to Claudia Conway, who gift me this one.
And this is one little surprise for Claudia. This is her seedling with very unusual buds. I picked one, but they are still too small and opened not well in my home for take a picture of it. But I can describe it. It is purple with small eyezone, and dark edge which is turn to big ruffled teeth edge. Amazing, but I need to see normal bloom, what not gonna happened this year. Cross: Darla Anita x China Clipper.

Now I see one big problem with gardening in two gardens in different parts of Lithuania. I wish I could found any way to get any money for my home and big garden to place all my flowers in. If you know any person who can help me, please write in comments, or contact me in other ways.

Have a nice day, my garden friends.

Gladiolus Exhibition 2013

This year, first time in my life I visited exhibition of gladiolus in Panevėžys Gabrielės Petkevičaitės-Bitės library. This exhibition is one of the best gladiolus show in Lithuania. Organizator and hybridizer Dr. Alfonsas Žobakas did amazing job for it. This year gladiolus exhibition reached international level. This year we have gladiolus flowers not only from our members in Lithuania, bu Latvian and Belarus. Latvian hybridizer Laimonis Zakis is known for us, he visited exhibition last year, but this year he came with Raimonds Cīrulis. From Belarus came great person, warm for talks and great for experience to come here from Belarus with gladiolus - she is Alesia V.Kruchonok. And now you can see a part of that exhibition in my photos. Enjoy
Lithuanian hybridizer Danutė Simonaitienė with husband and I with Alesia V.Kruchonok, Belarus.
One of 3 stands in exhibition. What is very great was glass roof which give us best light for gladiolus fowers and that can make us better photos.
This table of gladiolus is our neighbor Alesia V.Kruchonok, Belarus, gladiolus display. Something very nice. One almost green gladiolus still not opened when she pick that on table. Other day that must to look better, but that can see others.
All hybridizers and exhibition visitors gets into motion when seen a Lithuanian politician and Minister of Defense from 2008 to 2012 Rasa Juknevičienė, which very interested in gladiolus hybridizing and our gladiolus hybridizer Ona Dana Bagdonaitė teach her.
And after successful teaching we make a photo with members. From left: Genė Ratkevičienė, Ona Dana Bagdonaitė, Rasa Juknevičienė, Danutė Simonaitienė and me.
And then teacher wanted to take a picture with a "student", she gave on gladiolus from show for first crosses.

That is all from our show in Lithuania. I wish next year I can make an exhibition of irises and daylilies+lilies. But time will shows what will be.
Good luck and enjoy last chance to work in garden before autumn, when days will be rainy and not so warm as now.

Lithuanian flower hybridzers society exhibition of gladiolus and dahlias. Kalvarija

The day start early in the morning. I went to train station and stay in long row to buy a ticket. And when I get it I must to run to get in my train in time. I love trains, because they always be in time and I can plan my day perfectly. Also, they are cheaper than other transport and place is more for so big people like me. Just kidding.

All day I have some nice work to do and the main point was to learn how to make an exhibition. As a head of society I must to know basic things about it and be ready to make other exhibition. So this day was my learning day. A lot information for short time, but when I back home all that I noted and make priority tasks to do for other exhibitions.
And there is few photos from this exhibition.
I with my best hybridizing teacher and greatest hybridizer - Jonas Auksuolis Liutkevičius.

A view of exhibition.

Daylily seedlings 2013 Part II

(Mountain Wildflower x Orange Firecat) Seedling from William Marchant seeds. When I see first bloom I try to give a name, and only one, which come to my mind is Sky of July. Some evenings sky of July is orange to purple when sun goes down. I like eye and edge. Wait for next season blooms.
(Mascara Snake x   ) Seeds from AHS International Seed Bank. First bloom was very close to spider, real kid from Mascara Snake, but second bloom is in this photo and you can see it. Color is very unusual. Light purple with eyezone. Even in this photo it is hard to look, but in real, when sun lights up eye look very nice. It is close to dust purple to grey. Throat make this daylily look great. Only second years old seedling, but scape was very high. What is very unusual of this daylily is pollen color. It was light yellow and look like citrina dusts. Amazing.
(Bob Olson x unknown) Seedling from John Kulpa seeds. It is hard to capture this type of color daylilies, but when that daylily is seedling, that I need to try as hard as I can. As example this photo I take after hour of try. I make over 250 photos of only this one, and this look close to real. This deep red seedling has amazing edge. One day it shows some small white teeths. On this they are too, but other bloom has more. One of the keepers, which I will use in my hybridizing programs.
(Ann Kulpa x Unknown) Seedling from John Kulpa seeds. This color is hard to capture with camera too, but after play with other bloom and camera I found the way to catch a real color. When I see the bud of this I thought that this will be wow. Bud looks like an aligator mouth with large teeths. And when it opened I was shocked. So great seedling. I use his pollens few days to cross with all my tet daylilies and seedlings I have. I think seedlings from cross of Strippled Statement x this seedling must to give me some nice seedlings.
(Lacy Dusk x Get'r Done) Seedling from William Marchant seeds. This one seeds I get in first years from William. When I see the parentage I dream of amazing seedlings. And here it is. Only one seedling left after this winter, but this is wowzer. Great shape, color and size. I think this is perfect seedling. I use this pollens with some of my tet daylilies also, but not many set pods. First blooms was very poly. In all I counted 50% poly blooms. This one is last bloom on scape and it looks perfect.

(Crowned Heads x Fiji) Seedling from William Marchant seeds. Another great seedling from William. I love that small throat and light color with cute edge.
(Lee Reinke x Jerry Whirligig) Seedling from AHS International Seed Bank seeds. Seedling with light future. Color is great, shape could be better, but this is only two years old. So next year it will be better, I hope.
Sibling to previous seedling (Lee Reinke x Jerry Whirligig). Shape is great, color cute, but that is all. Just what a nice different between those two siblings.
(Blue Eyes x Gentle Shepherd) And in the end of Part II, I add my own seedling, which look good for me. I don't expect this shape from that cross. Blue Eyes is red round with white line in the centre. This seedling has mixed color from BE and Gentle Shepherd, just from where goes this shape, I don't know... This one has nice edge. I don't know in which cross I want to use this, so I just keep it and enjoy the blooms.

Cute seedlings with many promises. I hope next year summer will be more interesting, than this, because I may see some seedlings second blooms and many more siblings and new ones, with which I work this summer.

Daylily seedlings 2013 Part I

Bass Gibson seedling x unknown - John Kulpa seeds. One of the most unusual color combination daylily seedling in my garden this year. Love big green to yellow throat and light purple eye/halo to purple base. Edge is more ruffled of other seedlings, but photos is bad, because of rain and wind damages. If this survive and show me the same next few years, then this may have a bright future.
(Windham Aphrodite's Nighty x Webster's Pink Wonders) Seeds from AHS International Seed Bank. Thanks Maureen Strong for possibility to get these seeds. This one is amazing. I think that I will add more photos of this in next part of seedlings, because next bloom of this show better flower. What I can say about this seedling. For real, I don't expect this. I dream just something like one or other parent, but result shocked me. Bud is like a true lily, which look up and open like lily, not daylily. Bloom has not only great color, shape and etc, but it was very strong. As first seedling after rain look bad, so this look perfect. Even strong wind, which damage majority part of my daylily blooms and even scape's of  few, so this stand like in early morning.
(Cool Morning Mist x Vertical Horizon). One more beauty from AHS International seed bank. As my grandmother say, that I have very much yellow seedlings, I ask her to show me few similar, and then she take words back. This one I very like. Color in morning more look close to white in edge and deep green in throat. This is first and only bloom from that cross. Wait for next year, when those clumps start to bloom. I am not kidding, they are really forming a clumps. Some have 5 fans. Remember those seedlings are only second years old.
[(Stippled Statement x Venus Flytrap) x Predator] Seedling from William Marchant seeds. When I saw first scape in William Marchant seedling bed, I stay close every day and wait when it show any color of bud. And one day, when buds started to change color, I wait. First bloom make me disappoint it a little, because two blooms turn in one and no good view at all. Second few was poly, and few last blooms was like this. If my memory won't lie me, this is last bloom on scape. All blooms color the same like this, foliage deep green and very strong. I think this will be Evergreen, because no one of dormant show me this kind of leaves. Amazing seedling.
(Bass Gibson seedling x unknown) Another seedling from John Kulpa seeds. If I get very close to bloom I can see few small white teeth's on it. Yes! At least I have something from that series of blooms. Not very special and wow (I am still talking about teeth's), but I like it. What surprise me more - shape. It so nice and I have hopes that next year blooms may be better. Because color of this is always great. Not like some other seedlings from this cross. I don't add them, because there is no color, only poor looking blooms. But this have everything, shape, color, eye and teeth's.
(Raspberry Queen TM x William Austin Norris) And here it is. My first tet. seedling in blooms. I think that I will love it the same like those precious from donated seeds from States. This one get shape of Raspberry Queen TM, which is seedling with name, and the only good feature is bud count, and pollen parent give him this nice eye. If I am right, this is pattern eye? Each bloom is very nice, even they all are the same, but this catching my eye every time it blooms.

So this is enough for today.
 Good luck,
Edvinas

Working hard this summer

Hey for all who visit my blog,
This time I can relax for few days and then work more. All July I work with daylilies in grandmother garden and now, when I go home, there I can to organise my irises, sell extra ones and replant. Small ones grow very fast.
Every day I feel so great. This working in garden and always surounded with flowers and amazing gardens. Today I went in Šiauliai botanical garden. That garden is one of the best in Lithuania. It is small, but very cosy and well organised. Personal is very nice and always help to ID the plants. And as always they get some to take with myself. But about them I will write in other blog.
This time I talk only about work with seedling beds in grandmother garden.
This is one of finest photo taken in planting progress. Love the looks.
And there is start of my journey. In June 24, I go to grandmother garden and found this. She asked to plug the field of grass. But still I need to dig all this to remove all grass. That was work for few days.
Then I make the shapes of beds.
When I done with that I take very much compost and cow manure. That keeps seedlings very strong. And then no fertilizer needed.
This is how my seedling field looks like. In the same process I work with rock hill garden. I make it bigger, because plants in older one grow so fast and need more space. So there you see a half with plants and other part without them. When I remove all grass off, then I asked for neighbours to go to get some rocks for it. So we take so much, that the number of them was two times more than I used to older.
And there you see how it looks now. In first plan is seedling bed too, but organised as flower bed. Those shrubs are my seedlings of magnolia. They are only 3 years old, but they are big. There also are some botanical iris seedlings, they are two years old. Some other seedlings and this bed is filled with my work from seeds. I covered seedlings with cut grass to keep weeds out when I was in my home garden and can't go there to clean beds.
There is my work close to the end. When I make all beds clean, then I found that I have one more seedling bed needed to replant, so I dig more grass off and make one bed with magnolia seedlings and other my own seedlings of daylilies by 2012 crosses. I try to make one seedling bed, but that was big. Not much crosses, many from each. One of cross, from one pod produce me over 50 seedlings. Nice. All seeds sprouted and growing well.
And this is it. My seedling beds done. All planted, covered with grass mulch and then enjoy the work of all month in there. Now grandmother garden is heaven for me. So much hopes in there. I try to make and some named beds. One is by Claudia Conway seeds, other by Mick Morry, one of William Marchang and then my own iris seedling beds then a half of bed was with Loic Tasquier seedlings. So there is all hopes for my future.
So how do you like me work fo this summer? I think I done everything fine and will get the best results in future.
Enough for now. Planning to write some more blogs with blooms of named varieties and seedlings.
